Is your child uncoordinated?

Does you child appear to be a bit clumsy or awkward when performing simple tasks such as getting dressed, catching and/or handwriting? They may have a disorder known as Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). DCD affects a child’s learning and performance of age appropriate gross (larger movements) and fine (smaller movements) motor skills. It effects a small percentage of children tending to be more common in boys than girls, and may be diagnosed in association with other conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), speech delays or learning difficulties.

Common signs to look out for

There are some common signs of DCD to look out for, including:

  • Appearing clumsy, awkward or uncoordinated
  • Difficulty performing fine or gross motor skills – not due to other conditions
  • Displaying difficulty with learning new skills (particularly in comparison to their peers)
  • Regularly falling behind when completing tasks at school
  • Displaying signs of frustration, embarrassment, decreased self-confidence and isolation due to their inability to perform the same tasks as their peers
  • Avoiding socializing with children within their age group

Unfortunately, DCD is not a condition that your child will grow out of, however any secondary issues can be minimized or prevented with early intervention. Through the assistance of our experienced and compassionate paediatric physiotherapists at Western Paediatric Physiotherapy your child’s fine and gross motor skills can be improved, along with their self-confidence. Our friendly team will assess your child’s development and determine the appropriate management plan to help them achieve their full potential.
