Cerebral Palsy and Physiotherapy

Cerebral Palsy and Physiotherapy

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common physical disability experienced in childhood. The term covers a group of disorders that have an effect on the individual’s ability to move – the word cerebral relating to the brain, while palsy relates to a lack of muscle control. It is a life-long condition resulting from damage or dysfunction in the developing brain either during pregnancy or soon after birth.

CP presents differently in different people, affecting:

  • Body movement
  • Muscle control
  • Muscle coordination
  • Muscle tone
  • Reflex
  • Posture
  • Balance
  • Some people may also experience visual, learning, hearing, speech and intellectual impairments as well as epilepsy.

These symptoms may improve or worsen over time, however early intensive intervention can help to provide the opportunity for affected children to reach their full potential. Our experienced physiotherapists at Western Paediatrics Physiotherapy are trained in the assessment, observation and movement analysis of neurological conditions, including CP. Through this assessment we are able to put together an appropriate treatment program to help your child to:

  • Normalize their muscle tone and strengthen muscles
  • Improve balance, coordination and posture
  • Develop gross motor skills
  • Improve their mobility and independence
  • Experience normal movement through fun and functional activities
  • Most importantly, improve their quality of life and confidence

Regular physiotherapy sessions can be beneficial throughout the life of an individual with CP, helping to maintain or further improve the condition. As mentioned, early intervention can be more beneficial in helping your child to reach their full potential, so don’t hesitate to contact our caring Western Paediatrics Physiotherapy team in Hoppers Crossing.
